Stretch your voice and your body!
When the body and voice constrict, it can lead to feelings of disempowerment, which can put a real damper on the activities, friendships, and interactions that bring vital joy and meaning to our lives.
Bring big, loud energy into your life twice a day, once a day, or three times a week, and experience the difference it makes!
What we’ll do:
Our biggest goal is to leave each 30 minute session feeling better than we felt at the beginning.
Since Parkinson's symptoms are so variable, each class will necessarily be responsive to the specific needs of the participants. The sound element is entirely improvised. Sometimes we do a call and response, other times, after I give a cue, you can sing or shout whatever melody or sound you like. It doesn’t have to be pretty! Our only goal is to be loud, and to use our body’s power for joy.
Each session is 30 minutes, and the class meets at the subscription rate that works best for you.
(Teach Write Now pays its instructors at the rate of $50/hour, which is 70% of the cost, and the remaining 30% is to cover production, taxes, and support the co-op.)
Group Classes and rates are also available. Please send an email to leah at teachwritenow.com to inquire.
After purchase, you will receive an email with scheduling options and information.
FACILITATOR BIO:
Leah Velez specializes in using dance connection, stretching, and movement for increased happiness, mobility, and better relationships with ourselves and our partners.
They are not a therapist, and this class is a supplement to, and not a replacement for medical care. The sessions are facilitated by a dancer and former musician who, since 2016, has been working with a client who has Parkinson's. They created this fun and effective interdisciplinary program together

What we’ll do:
- Either seated or standing, we move our bodies from head to toe. Focusing on making the biggest shapes that we can. We spend some extra time on the areas that give us the most trouble.
- We do a series of patterns of movements that repeat several times. We've got goofy names for them (like the carwash, the alien abduction, the flying squirrel, and the cartoon character). It's about more than just fun! These help us visualize the shapes we want to make--which helps to make them bigger, and to remember them!
- While we stretch, we fill our bellies with air, hold, and resist pressure, and then we expel the air with as much sound as we can. We play with that sound--sometimes it's goofy, sometimes it's lyrical, sometimes it's ugly, sometimes it carries a tune, sometimes we wobble it around, other times we hold one note for as long as we can. We use vowels because they carry sound further.
